CLUB NOLABEL – B72, Vienna, March 24, 2015.
I Don’t Tell Fairy Tales, Ford Madox, Ant Antic
The Austrian independent and alternative music scene is large. There exists a huge variety of bands and artists that provide outstanding and high quality work, yet they are widely unknown and unsigned.
“Club NoLabel” is providing exactly those bands a platform and the possibility to perform in front a bigger crowd. Every third Tuesday of the month, they host an event at B72 – which has become somewhat of an institution in the Viennese underground music scene – where three unsigned Austrian bands are given the opportunity to get on stage and present their music.
Yesterday, I went to this event for the first time after a friend of mine had invited me. Equipped with my camera (photos can be found here), I was excitedly waiting for the first act to show up – curious about what should be expected and about what kind of music I was going to listen to. I have never heard of any of those bands before and thus had no idea what I would experience.
The first artist was a young DJ called “I Don’t Tell Fairy Tales”. I have to admit that I am not particularly into electronic music and sounds coming from a laptop, but I definitely did enjoy his performance and even though this was not my field of knowledge, I could tell that his music was extremely well done.
After a short break, the second band of the night entered the stage, Ford Madox Ford. This five people group mixed rock songs with electronic influences and beautiful cello sounds, making it a very interesting combination.
The club has gotten very filled by now and people have moved closer to the stage awaiting the last band and the headliner of this evening, Ant Antic. The three men that make up this band are definitely doing something different. It is hard to describe what exactly their style of music was, I think the best that would do is independent electronic rock. Ant Antic consisted only of two keyboards, a side drum and a bass; however, they proved everyone that a guitar is not particularly needed to roll.
Ant Antic’s sound was very experimental and alternative. The singer’s voice sounded like a slightly distorted combination of Placebo’s Brian Molko’s and Keane’s Tom Chaplin’s singing. By having established their own unique sound they set themselves apart from very many other bands and they did not seem to be afraid of trying something different. Their songs such as “Blood Sugar” are shaped by an ongoing never stopping electronic beat mixed with pounding rock and roll element.
After having run out of songs, the audience cheered them back up on stage making them re-play two of their songs as an encore. Ant Antic is an impressive band that one should keep an eye on. I am sure that they have the potential to play in front of crowds like this on a regular basis.
To put the whole matter in a nutshell, I had a really great time at this evening. I love what Club NoLabel is doing and paying 4 EUR in order to be able to see three bands is way more than a fair price. I will definitely keep following what these three bands that will produce and provide in the future and I can only highly recommend everyone to check out the next event on April 21, 2015. Again, the Austrian music scene is big and very creative and very many bands are struggling to make it – and exactly those bands need our support.
